Mokena has a population of more than 18,000 and is the fastest growing community in the region. Mokena owes its existence largely to the Rock Island Railroad. In 1851 the right-of-way for the railroad was surveyed through Mokena. Subsequently, the land along the north side of the Rock Island tracks along Front Street was subdivided and lots were sold for $100.00 each, thus forming the majority of the original village.

In our historic Downtown Mokena, we are working to restore the area to an early 1900’s theme by encouraging the merchants to participate in a cooperative Façade and Signage grant program with the Village.
